Tinkinswood Burial Chamber

IMG_6543

Just outside the village of St Nicholas in the Vale of Glamorgan is the ancient burial mound of Tinkinswood. Excavated in 1914, the 6,000-year-old Neolithic burial chamber was once the resting place for more than 50 people. It’s a random sight to see sitting in a field in the middle of South Wales and I can’t even begin to imagine how the chamber was built – the capstone covering the top of the mound is gigantic and according to Cadw, the historic environment service that maintains the site, it weighs an incredible 40 tonnes.
